Conveyancing – with a difference! We could see conveyancing as a picture of the Christian life – entering into a ‘contract’ with God. In a conveyancing contract there is a buyer, seller, property, purchase price etc, but with our contract with God there is a difference – not a seller but a Giver, not a buyer but a receiver, the ‘property’ is eternal life and the price has already been paid in full! We don’t pay for ‘eternal life’, it is a gift to us from God which all we need to do is receive, the price has already been paid by the death of Jesus on the cross. In conveyancing, after doing various searches, investigations and enquiries a decision is made and the moment of commitment is when we reach ‘exchange of contracts’. Usually then a deposit is paid by the buyer. With our contract with God there is a point when we commit ourselves, the moment of decision, but unlike a conveyancing contract we pay no deposit (there is nothing to pay) but God gives us the ‘deposit’ of His Spirit in our hearts ‘guaranteeing what is to come’. There is then a period of time between exchange and ‘completion’, which varies in each case. Completion is effected by a deed of Transfer. Exchange and completion can be almost simultaneous, in some cases a long period, in some a short period. This time represents our life here on earth before our final ‘transfer’ to heaven where we receive the ‘fullness of our inheritance’. With God there is a Full Title Guarantee – a sure and certain hope of eternal life. The One we are making the contract with is totally reliable and trustworthy. He will never be in breach of contract. He has never been known to break his word. |
